mojoBlog: Configuring mojoBlog

Step 1. Log in to your Joomla! Admin area

Once logged in, go to your top administration menu and hover/select; COMPONENTS scroll down till you see mojoBlog. Highlight mojoBlog and click.

mojoBlog Dashboard

You should soon see your brand-spankin new mojoBlog Dashboard, nestled neatly within comfortable reach of your global Joomla! Admin tools, I’ll quickly give you a run down on what’s what and where, starting beneath the screenshot below.

Dashboard At-A-Glance

MAIN MENU Up top (in the bar with the cute little mojoBlog logo, far right) you’ll find your main mojoBlog menu items;

You’ll find details and setup information of main menu function below, for now... let’s continue to explore the dashboard screen.

Dashboard-Latest Activity The dashboard section gets it’s information “Fed” to it via rss from the developers site (http://www.joomlify.com). Latest Activity will display a bit of information pertaining to your posts, who’s linking back to your posts (permalinks and posts), recent comments from your adoring public and general stats on how many posts you’ve published and whether you’ve gettin hammered by spammage *(if you’ve turned on and configured the akismet plugin.).

CONFIGURATION

Click on Main Menu OPTIONS and a new, horizontal submenu will appear. Far left of that submenu find GENERAL. A new tools window should replace the dashboard window and appear something like the screenshot below.

Multi-User Meat-n-Potatoes Weblog title: This is not currently used by mojoBlog *(hence, why you don’t see it in the screencap) but, it gets written to your configuration file anywho. If you’re thinking of keeping mojoBlog happy, leave this field alone. A near future release of mojoBlog will use this to “import” your default joomla site title.

Tagline: Same options as above

mojoBlog path (URI): This option should have populated with something like- http://www.yourdomain.com/components/com_mojo. If it did, leave it alone. If it didn’t, enter the above (substituting your actual domain name for yourdomain.com.

Website (URI): While this is an option in the stand alone version of WordPress, it IS NOT an option in this, the mojo version. Automatically, during install, this field should be filled out for you. CAUTION! changing this url parameter will break mojoBlog and you’ll have to go into your database and un-squirrel stuff. If you do fiddle and it messes up, try changing it back to the default URI of your site, e.g.http://yourjoomlasite.com with no trailing backslash.. Nuff said.

Email Address: Enter an email address which you use. This email address will be the one mojoBlug uses to send you notification of pending comments (if you turn this feature on).

Membership 2 Options Option 1; “Anyone can register” If ticked this will allow the general public to view all posts made in mojoBlog only. It has no affect on your Joomla! permissions settings. Default is ticked. Option 2; “Users must be registered..” if ticked, requires viewers wishing to comment on a post, to be registered. Registration is via the standard Joomla! Login-Register module.

New User Roles: As of Word Press 2.1, you can assign new permission levels including; author, editor and admin. These features while similar to Joomla!’s permissions, Do Not Affect or overlap Joomla! admin permissions. Granting someone admin access to mojoBlog will not allow them admin access to the Joomla! backend. Still, be careful assigning permissions, default is Subscriber.

Writing / Reading

Writing Options: The majority of options in Writing are fully self-explanatory so I’ll touch base with the few options you may twiddle or tweak. Under Formatting -IF- you plan to use an aftermarket WYSIWYG editor Plug-in WP-TinyMCE or WYSIWYG pro you’ll need to tick the box “use visual rich editor by default”.

Writing by e-Mail: As of this release (rc0.16) there’s nominal (read: no support) for this feature as WP requires access to application code not yet integrated into mojoBlog. *There are numerous 3pd WP plug-ins that offer post by email, I’m in early stages of working on one that looks promising and will post results under mojoBlog Plugins upon release. Reading Options: In the reading configuration settings you can dictate whether you want to limit the number of posts to per day or quantity, syndicate (your outgoing rss feeds) full post text or excerpts. NOTE* V2.0+ of WordPress now “hides” the optional excerpt editor (scroll down, beneath the file upload) so it’s easy to forget to use it. If you check “excerpts” and don’t remember to actually type in excerpts, well, you can imagine the moral of the story...

Discussion / Permalinks

Most discussion options are obvious however, one area I’ll touch on is the Common Spam Words option which I recommend. Adding your own known “spam” words to this option turns on mojoBlog’s internal “reference” checking mode which will discourage and prevent (some) unwanted spam commenting. There are a few excellent anti-spam plugins which I’ll highlight in upcoming mojoBlog Plugins posts. Additionally, you can get an updated list of “common spam phrases” directly from WordPress.org by clicking on the common spam words link. Right mouse click to open WP in a new window, select and highlight and copy list, close window and paste into your anti-spam box...

Permalinks At this time, changing the default permalink structure is not advisable IF you are using either SEF or other, non-OE/Joomla! Url detangler.I’ve currently disabled the ability to assign permalink options through mojoBlog but, am working on a plugin for com_sh404SEF-1.2.4s.zip which *(in the preliminary stages) looks promising.
